Studio Musmula – Interview

Studio Musmula – Interview

Maja and Coka are landscape architecture engineers, wifes, mothers, friends and comrades-in-arms.

Both grown up in harmony with nature, met at the Faculty of Forestry and immediately became inseparable, although they are very different by nature. After finishing their studies, they accidentally stepped into the world of weddings and realized that this is what they want to do forever.

They are dedicated to finding and using rare plants in their design, and they are inspired by locally produced plants, many of which they grow themselves. They are in favor of organically produced flowers and they are willing to cross the whole Serbia in order to get it.

The Musmula tree, its flower and fruit as well as its characteristic name, symbolizes their philosophy and that is why their studio Musmula is so called.

– What is the most difficult part about choosing plants for arrangements, is it simple to find combinations for new creations?

We are always trying to find inspiration in-season plants. Gardener`s path can be pretty long. It`s not just about flowers it is also about plants and weeds. Every single year new plants attract us and induce new creations. Besides plants, we find our inspiration in newlyweds and the environment in which we work. It is enough to see them and we already know what to do. Contact with newlyweds it`s really important to all of us. The most important thing is to make a compromise and make a good choice to avoid misunderstandings.

– How much needs of the market affect the development of style and how much it gives you the freedom to work and how much you have adapted to all of it?

We already have our style and newlyweds are coming to us just because of the or recognizable style. We always wanna adjust it to the season. It’s not always color, the shape or form of arrangement. Details are the most important. For example, last year, golden was the perfect famous color of the year, so we were putting golden animal figures on the table. At the beginning of our story, we didn’t want to fit in trends…we set our trends.

2009th, when we started Studio Musmula we were only one who did it in that way. After us, Branko, our colleague starts to do the same thing and that`s a different flower arranging approach than it happens before in this region till then. Our idea was that we can create and make a form of the taste of the customer rather than impose on us. Bunch of things changed from that day when we started. Arranging quality, special style, and combinations. The impact of smedia contibutes newlyweds wishes and keeping them updated. Instagram and Pinterest are giving people new visions of how that should look in reality.

– So you were very active in market research?

Yes, that was our big task and we think that we succeeded in that.

– Tell us something about „Procvat“…?

We have educated the market with our work even customers and people who are just watching and who are no ready for direct sale but thinking about flowers. When 10 years have come to the blistering end, we started the decade a bit different and not to work on our own. Then, we decided to organize „Procvat“ and on purpose, we made two studios to send a message that we are not a competitive one to another but to work together, share information, and through that to make progress and to compete on the market. Therefore, with our power, for our profession, we ascend to the ladder. We should push each other up. Because we have moto „ We believe in sharing“!

– Were you children of flowers in your youth?

Of course, we did. And today we are. Every week we are carefully making our purchases after consulting each other. And every week we are more surprised than the week before. Probably because we lived surrounded by plants. We have finished the Faculty of Forestry, major – landscape architecture where we found out all about plant design, how plants grow, how plants are treated, and what is so special for each of them. All lucky ones who have finished this major professors call „children of flowers“

– How much education is helpful for your job?

It helps for sure, we learned to think wider, a bunch of things about plants. And by side we didn`t have rules what to do so we had all freedom in this world. But people can do this job without University, it`s optional.

– Compassion for the environment?

Sustainability and good quality are very important to our work. Because we choose our local, organic flowers and we always say no to import. Why? Good question. Import flowers have a bad impact on life savings, travels miles away and it is treated with aggressive chemicals. We are trying to help the environment, cause of it, we are not using things as florists do. Flower sponge we are not using cause its toxic. Instead of him, our benefits are strings. It is kinda armature holding a flower. We are trying step by step to educate ourselves in that direction to do less harm to the environment.

– Guns or roses?

Roses for sure!

– Do you imagine your dream meadow? And do you have your own fairytale garden?

Of course, we do. We have our dreamy peony plantation. Peony is a characteristic cause it grows one month. They do require a little patience after planting, but once they begin to bloom, they will work to beautify your garden without too much fuss. So after 4 years, we had the first real, peony harvest.

– What is the key moment when you fully understand who you are and what you want exactly? How long did it take to get to the point?

We asked the time what is the solution? It said let me pass. Therefore, we needed a lot of time. We started all of this with thoughts that we are ready and steady for landscape arch. Even we registered in the bureau for landscape architecture. The beginning of the Flower arrangements started very spontaneously. Over time, this prevailed. Until winter we were doing urbanistic landscape contests, afterward-gardens, coffee shops, etc. In these parallel spheres, we realized that we are completely in a flower design. It was hard to cut but we comprehend that we need to focus on that. Every single year we are open to new opportunities and new ideas.

– Do your creativity and alternative way of thinking help you to solve the client’s problems?

Yes. They come frequently without any wish, cause they know our work. They saw it for example at the wedding or somewhere else. From their first notion, we are trying to create exactly what they want…Sometimes it’s hard, the client gives you a dare to make something that you never made but we manage to realize all client’s wishes.
